Abstract: This discourse is a comparative study of the criminalisation of the violation of a corpse in context of traditional medicine in subequatorial Africa, including consideration of customary law and seeks specifically to examine whether the use of body parts for medicine falls within the paradigm of traditional medicine as opposed to any professed use in witchcraft.

DOCTORAL THESIS: This thesis seeks to examine the practice of traditional medicine in South Africa by providing an analysis of the regulatory framework of this system of medicine, which is original to Africa and is practised from a perspective of indigenous philosophy, ideology, possibly even religion, with a specific pharmacopoeia and usage of medicines, whether from a symbolic perspective or otherwise.
