About

Homeopathy is a system of medicine, developed by Dr Samuel Hahnemann (1755 – 1843), in which disorders in any patient are treated by prescribing specially prepared minute doses of natural substances aimed at stimulating the patient’s innate defence system to initiate the healing process and to restore balance – these medicines are specially prepared for each patient, based on individuality and holism.

Education and training in homeopathy in South Africa encompass study in anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and diagnostics according to the conventional biomedical model, together with all aspects in homeopathy. After graduation, homeopaths are qualified as diagnosticians and primary healthcare practitioners.

Registration under the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPCSA), the legal regulatory statutory health council that oversees complementary medicine, is mandatory for any person practising homeopathy. A qualified homeopath is also trained to prepare homeopathic medicines, but a Compounding and Dispensing License, issued by the Department of Health, is mandatory when providing any homeopathic medicine to a patient.

Dr Louis Mullinder, a former diplomat, holds the requisite master’s degree in homeopathy, having qualified in 2003 from the Technikon Witwatersrand, now the University of Johannesburg, has seen private practice and also served as the registrar of the AHPCSA for some fifteen years.

He holds a Compounding and Dispensing License and his practice is registered with the Board of Healthcare Funders. In addition to his qualification in homeopathy, he holds three legal qualifications, including a master’s and doctorate degrees in medical law and ethics, attained at the University of Pretoria.
